Key Takeaways

  • Demand response — reducing electricity consumption during peak grid events — is a significant revenue opportunity for grocery retailers with large refrigeration loads.

  • Panelists from Emerson, Enersponse, and National Grid outlined how grocery operators can participate in utility demand response programs without food safety risk.

  • Axiom's Virtual Battery technology enables refrigeration systems to store thermal capacity and shed load on demand during peak events.

  • Demand response revenue can meaningfully offset refrigeration operating costs — turning sustainability participation into a financial positive.

📊 Stat: Utility demand response programs for commercial refrigeration can generate $10,000–$100,000+ in annual incentive payments per retailer, depending on enrolled capacity and market. (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory)

What Role Does Predictive Modeling Play in Refrigeration Demand Response?

Predictive Modeling (2-minute snippet):

Why Are Demand Response Programs a Growing Opportunity for Grocery Retailers?

Demand response programs, offered by utilities around the country, have been available for decades as a way for businesses to earn new revenue. However, many retail grocery chains have been hesitant to enroll, especially with mission critical assets like their refrigeration systems.

A lot has changed in recent years. Enrollment has been streamlined, participation has been made easy and safe with IoT, and incentives are available to reduce/eliminate upfront costs.

On March 22nd, 2022, Axiom Cloud hosted a webinar with panelists from Emerson, Enersponse, and National Grid, with the goal of creating awareness of recent changes in the Demand Response ecosystem. It was great to connect with so many grocery retailers, technology providers, and industry leaders interested in taking a fresh look at Demand Response!

What Topics Did Axiom Cloud's March 2022 Demand Response Webinar Cover?

Discussion topics included:

  • What is demand response, and how much revenue can be generated?

  • How have some grocery stores participated in the past, and why isn’t it more widespread?

  • Why haven’t more grocery stores leveraged their refrigeration loads for demand response?

  • What has changed recently? Does it make sense to reevaluate demand response in 2022?
